Ayeyarwady River at Dangerous Level in Myitkyina City

The level of the Ayeyarwady River in the Kachin State capital, Myitkyina City, surpassed its dangerous depth of 12 metres on 2 June 2025, according the Kachin State Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

U Naing Lin Htwe, the director of the junta-run  Kachin State Department of Meteorology and Hydrology posted on Facebook that the depth of the river in Myitkyina City had reached the dangerous depth of 12 metres at 3:15 am on 2 June and by 7:30 am the same day it was 5 cm deeper, after which the depth remained steady.

A local social aid worker told MNJ that Kyatpaungchan, a low-lying ward in Myitkyina City, is currently submerged, and residents are having to use boats to get around.

He said: “As the water keeps rising, cars can't get through anymore. Most parts of Kyatpaungchan can only be reached by boat now.”

Currently, about 100 houses in Kyatpaungchan Ward are flooded.

The water level of the Ayeyarwady River has continued to rise and areas of Myitkyina City, such as Myothigyi Ward, Union Road, and Main Road have now also started flooding. Floodwaters have also started to reach Manau Square, a well-known landmark in Sitarpu Ward.

In Myitkyina City, the wards of Kyatpaungchan, Ranpu, Lelkone, and Pawoo are regularly affected by flooding during the rainy season.

Torrential rains have also caused flash floods on the N Mai Kha and Mali Kha rivers, which merge just north of Myitkyina City to form the Ayeyarwady River. Over the weekend flash floods on the N Mai Kha affected Chipwi Township and flash floods on the Mali Kha affected Putao Township, but they have since receded.

Last year on 30 June 2024, the Ayeyarwady River in Myitkyina City reached a depth of 14.06 metres and flooded several low lying downtown wards.
